The Peace Boat works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment. The philosophy is based on the idea that all these aspects are inter-related, and that any problem faced by any community is a global challenge, which must be tackled through co-operation between peoples, organisations and governments of the world. Every year, Peace Boat organizes several educational peace voyages onboard a large passenger ship. When the ship is in port, we co-operate with local groups on the organization of exchange and study programs. These programs aim to promote international peace and friendship at a grassroots level. At the same time, educational and networking activities onboard bring together concerned individuals from around the world in the search for new approaches and solutions to contemporary global issues. The Topaz is an older but well maintained ship, maybe one of the oldest cruise vessel still in regular operation. Originally launched in April of 1956 she has had several names and bears the historic lines of a classic ocean going cruise ship.
